"Quadrangle’s first and biggest move was to excavate a segment of the site adjacent to and along the building, openly visible and accessible from the front avenue, to create a sunken courtyard area that is useable in itself (as a restaurant terrace in fine weather) but also brings light to the building’s basement level, increasing useable space and thus value. The architects also added a circulation structure clad in corten steel along this same facade, with a glazed access pavilion to round things out. This ‘dig and add’ strategy clearly announces the building’s new status, but more practically, greatly increases its income-earning capacity."
